Crackdown against ‘overstaying foreigners’
Overstaying foreigners have been warned: The Passport and Immigration Office (PIO) is reportedly taking “necessary measures” to track them down.
They will be arrested and repatriated, Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth has told Parliament.
Jugnauth said a dedicated team of officers, known as the Tracing and Tracking Team, will mount crack down operations, as and when required, at different places simultaneously.
The PIO will be supported by various units of the Mauritian Police such as the anti-riot Special Supporting Unit, the Emergency Response Service, the Field Intelligence Office, the Central Investigation Division, and the Groupement d’Intervention de la Police Mauricienne (GIPM) a paramilitary unit.
PIO records reveal that there are 585 foreigners whose tourist/business visas have expired and 2,294 expatriate workers have been reported “missing”.
