POLICE have launched an investigation into the suspected fraudulent emptying of bank accounts belonging to two Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) customers, occurring mere hours after their monthly salaries were credited.

Detectives are currently scrutinizing personal account activity after the victims reported a combined loss of over Rs 123,000.

The cases, which emerged in late February, have seen significant sums vanish before the account holders could access their earnings.

Rapid depletion of funds

The most substantial loss was reported by Yasin Ragoo, who claims MUR 95,000 was siphoned from his account on 25 February.

The disappearance occurred less than three hours after his salary had been deposited. Mr Ragoo further alleged that several unauthorized accounts had been opened in his name without his consent.

In a separate incident on 26 February, a victim identified as Nundita reported that her balance of MUR 28,393.97—the remainder of her salary following standard deductions—was wiped out overnight.

Despite the funds being credited at midnight, the balance had reached zero by 7:00 AM. Nundita noted that she does not utilize online banking services.

Ongoing investigations

The Goodlands Criminal Investigation Division (CID) is spearheading the inquiry into Nundita’s case, recently requesting formal authorization to access her banking records to trace the movement of the funds. Investigations into Mr Ragoo’s claims are also progressing.

A spokesperson for the Mauritius Commercial Bank stated:

“The bank is following these files closely and collaborating with the police, though we are bound by confidentiality constraints regarding specific client details.”

Both victims have filed official police complaints as authorities work to determine how the security breaches occurred so soon after the victims’ paydays.
