Police Issue Over 50 Fines as New Penalty Points System Takes Effect
Police have issued more than 50 fines within the first 48 hours of the new penalty points (permis à points) system coming into effect, signalling a strict “zero tolerance” approach to road safety.
The crackdown, which began when the legislation was enacted on 31 January, saw dozens of motorists penalised for various traffic offences across the island.
Drink and Drug Driving
Among the most serious infractions recorded during this initial two-day period were:
- 15 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol.
- 4 cases related to the consumption of narcotics.
A “Clear Signal”
Authorities stated that the high volume of fines serves as a clear signal to the public regarding the enforcement of the Highway Code.
The introduction of the points-based system is designed to produce immediate effects on driver behaviour, with the police force reiterating their commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on the road.
