Police Investigation Launched after Doctor Assaulted at SAJ Hospital
A senior doctor has been hospitalised after being struck with a metal bar during a violent disturbance at the Sir Anerood Jugnauth (SAJ) Hospital on Sunday night, 29 March.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 10:00 pm, reportedly began following the vandalism of a place of worship located within the hospital grounds.
The damage sparked significant tension, which quickly escalated into physical violence.
Assault on Staff
During the unrest, a group of individuals entered the hospital premises. Dr Tarachand Seenauth, the Duty Manager on shift, was reportedly struck in the head with an extensible metal bar.
The injured physician was rushed for an emergency CT scan to assess the extent of the trauma.
While medical examinations have fortunately revealed no serious abnormalities, Dr Seenauth remains under clinical observation in hospital.
Police Response
Understaffed police units at the scene were reportedly unable to intervene immediately as the situation deteriorated.
It is further understood that representatives from a socio-cultural association arrived at the facility during the height of the tensions.
The matter has been formally reported to the authorities, and a police investigation into the vandalism and subsequent assault is now underway.
