Heavy Rain Watch Extended Until Saturday 2 May as Active Clouds Bring Storms

A heavy rain watch for Mauritius has been extended until 4:00 AM on Saturday, following a directive from the Vacoas meteorological station.

Forecasters originally set the alert to expire at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, 28 April, but persistent active clouds near the island have prompted a significant extension.

Local weather is expected to be heavily influenced by these systems, bringing moderate to locally heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms throughout the day and into the evening.

Risk of Flooding and Hazardous Conditions

The meteorological service has warned of temporary water accumulations in flood-prone areas.

Residents are being urged to exercise extreme caution, with official advice recommending that the public stay sheltered and avoid plains, hiking trails, and sea excursions.

Officials also warned against seeking shelter under trees during lightning strikes.

Driving conditions are expected to deteriorate, with authorities citing reduced visibility caused by heavy downpours and fog.

Regional Outlook and Temperatures

While the entire island remains under the watch, the eastern half and higher ground are expected to see the most persistent moderate showers overnight.

Temperatures are forecast to remain relatively warm:

  • Central Plateau: Highs of 25–27 °C, dropping to 20–22 °C overnight.
  • Coastal Regions: Highs of 29–31 °C, with lows between 24–26 °C.

Wind and Sea Conditions

Winds are currently blowing from the east-north-east at approximately 20 km/h. Beyond the reefs, the sea remains rough, with wave heights reaching around 2 metres.

Maritime activities are discouraged until conditions improve.
