A major search operation is underway off the coast of Albion following the disappearance of a 50-year-old man during a fishing expedition on Thursday morning, 30 April.

Mike Bagan, a local resident of Albion, vanished beneath the waves near the landmark lighthouse after diving from a boat to hunt for octopus.

Despite an immediate search by his companions and subsequent involvement from the National Coast Guard, he has not been seen since.

The Disappearance

The incident occurred on 30 April, shortly after the group set out at approximately 07:00.

According to statements provided to the Petite-Rivière police, Mr Bagan entered the water with the intention of capturing octopuses but failed to resurface.

Ibrahim, a fisherman and friend who was on board the vessel, described the moments leading up to the tragedy.

“Mike told us he wanted to dive,” he said. “He dived in. After a while, I couldn’t see him anymore.”

Search Efforts

The crew onboard initially attempted to locate their friend themselves before alerting the authorities.

Ibrahim noted that the sea conditions were calm at the time of the dive and described Mr Bagan as an experienced swimmer and diver.

The National Coast Guard continues to patrol the area. Police investigations into the circumstances of the disappearance are currently active.
