Police have brought the situation in Camp-Thorel under control following violent clashes on Sunday evening, 17 May, though a law enforcement presence will remain in the area to maintain order.

The unrest broke out at around 6:00 pm at the Camp-Thorel Health Track following an altercation between two distinct groups.

According to authorities, the dispute involved a group from the Rose-Hill region travelling on quad bikes and a second group consisting of local residents from Camp-Thorel and surrounding areas.

Tensions reportedly flared over the presence of quad bikes on the health track, an issue that had previously triggered multiple complaints from local walkers who frequent the path.

The confrontation quickly escalated into physical violence, with blows exchanged between the groups.

It is further reported that warning shots were fired into the air in an attempt to intimidate the opposing faction.

Following the initial outbreak of violence, a second vehicle was set on fire.

Firefighters from the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) responded swiftly to the scene and managed to bring the blaze under control.

During the chaos, the group from Rose-Hill fled the scene to seek refuge in a nearby wooded area.

Police successfully located the individuals hidden in the woods and subsequently escorted them to a secure location for their safety.

All vehicles involved in the incident have since been towed away by the Police Towing Unit. Officers also combed the scene and seized various items to be used as evidence.

An active investigation is now underway to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incidents and to determine the subsequent legal and police actions to be taken.
