2 Imported Mpox Cases Confirmed in Mauritius after Recent Travel from Madagascar
Mauritius has confirmed two imported cases of Mpox involving a Mauritian and a Comorian national, both of whom recently arrived in the country from Madagascar.
Health authorities launched an immediate contact tracing exercise following the diagnosis of the two men, aged 46 and 31.
The 31-year-old Comorian national reportedly fled a local medical facility earlier this Wednesday, 22 April, but was successfully located by officials later in the afternoon.
Medical Status and Isolation
Both patients are currently reported to be in stable condition and have begun receiving treatment.
They are being held in isolation at two separate facilities:
- Victoria Hospital in Candos
- Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital in Port Louis
Dr Fazil Khodabocus, Director of Health Services, confirmed the cases in a statement to RadioPlus this Wednesday, 22 April.
He noted that both individuals presented with classic symptoms of the virus, including high fever and skin lesions.
Public Health Guidance
Health officials have moved to reassure the public while reminding citizens of the nature of the virus.
Dr Khodabocus emphasised that Mpox is transmitted through close, direct contact with an infected person.
The incubation period for the virus is known to vary between five and 21 days. Key symptoms to monitor include:
- Fever
- Skin rashes or lesions
The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the situation as the contact tracing investigation progresses to identify any individuals who may have been exposed to the travellers.
