MRA Sets Rs 150 Billion Record in 2023/24 Revenue
The Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) has achieved a record-breaking performance for the 2023/24 financial year, collecting over Rs 150 billion in tax revenue. The total revenue reached Rs 150.2 billion, marking a significant milestone for the institution, which was previously led by Sudhamo Lall.
This success is due to several factors. Targeted tax investigations uncovered Rs 4.4 billion in undeclared income, resulting in additional tax assessments of Rs 14.1 billion.
The MRA also recovered nearly Rs 5 billion in unpaid taxes.
The authority expanded its taxpayer base, registering more than 75,000 new companies for corporate tax, including about 10,000 for VAT.
It also processed close to 99,000 tax refund requests.
On the customs front, inspections at ports and airports were intensified. Over 27,600 shipments were scanned, and one million luggage items were checked to combat smuggling and drug trafficking.
During this period, authorities seized drugs valued at over Rs 1 billion.
With a staff of 1,516 under the leadership of Rohit Ramnawaz, the MRA now plays a broader role beyond tax collection.
It is actively involved in fighting tax evasion and illegal trafficking, while also contributing significantly to funding public services.
