Trade Union Says No to Foreign Labour in Mauritius Sugar Sector
Ashok Subron, the spokesperson for the Joint Negotiating Panel (JNP), expressed the collective opposition of the four unions within the JNP to the possible recruitment of foreign labour in the sugarcane industry. Subron stated that a workforce shortage does not exist in the mills and that people are eager to work in the sugar factories.
“Recent observations within the sugar industry show a willingness of individuals to work in the factories. There is no shortage of labour,” he said. “If working conditions are improved, young individuals could readily become part of this sector.”
