Met Office Issues 48-hour Heavy Rain Watch Effective until Friday at 10am
A heavy rain watch is in effect across the island until Friday morning, 30 January, with weather experts warning of potential flooding and dangerous driving conditions.
The Mauritius Meteorological Station issued the alert at 10:15 am today, Wednesday 28 January.
The warning is scheduled to remain in place until 10:00 am on Friday 30 January, as a monsoon-related disturbance tracks toward the region.
Widespread Downpours Expected
Active cloud bands associated with the system are expected to influence local weather starting this evening.
While the day may begin with scattered showers, the Met Office predicts rain will become widespread across the entire island by tomorrow.
Forecasters warn that these bursts of rain may be moderate to heavy at times and are likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms.
Key Data and Tracking
As of 10:00 am today, the weather system was located near:
- Latitude: 16.6° S
- Longitude: 55.2° E
The disturbance is projected to begin moving in a south-easterly direction over the coming hours, bringing thicker cloud cover and reduced visibility due to fog in certain sectors.
Public Safety Warning
Authorities have highlighted several risks associated with the incoming weather:
- Flooding: Water accumulation is probable in areas prone to inundation.
- Visibility: Heavy showers and fog patches will significantly hamper visibility for road users.
- Lightning: The public is strictly advised not to seek shelter under trees during storms.
Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution, avoid hiking or maritime excursions, and stay away from open plains.
The Meteorological Services confirmed they are monitoring the situation closely and will issue further updates as conditions evolve.
