4 Metre Swells Trigger Emergency Coastal Warning Until 4 PM this Monday

Mauritius is on high alert today as authorities issued a formal high swell warning, with waves reaching four metres expected to lash the coastline. The Vacoas Meteorological Station confirmed the warning remains in effect until 16:00 this Monday, 19 January.

Coastal residents and visitors are being urged to exercise extreme caution as powerful waves threaten to inundate low-lying areas, particularly along the eastern and southern shores during high tide.

Safety Warnings and Sea Conditions

The sea remains “very rough” beyond the reefs. In a direct appeal to the public, officials have strongly advised fishermen, boat operators, and beachgoers to stay out of the water and avoid the shoreline entirely while the warning is active.

These turbulent conditions coincide with the movement of Dudzai, which has now weakened into a moderate tropical storm. As of 04:00 today, the storm was located approximately 550 kilometres east-south-east of Mauritius, moving west-south-west at a speed of 15 km/h.

Regional Forecast and Temperatures

In addition to the maritime risk, clouds approaching from the south and south-east are set to dictate the local weather patterns. The forecast includes:

  • Daytime: Partly cloudy skies with passing showers expected over the east, south, and central plateau.
  • Nighttime: Further cloud cover from the south will bring showers to the southern half of the island and the high ground.
  • Wind: A steady south-easterly breeze of approximately 20 km/h.

Temperature Outlook:

| Central Plateau | 26°C – 28°C | 20°C – 22°C |

| Coastal Regions | 30°C – 32°C | 24°C – 26°C |

While the swell warning is currently set to expire late this afternoon, residents are encouraged to monitor local updates for any extensions or changes to the safety guidance.
