Suren Dayal has officially assumed the role of General Manager at the State Trading Corporation (STC), taking the helm of the powerful parastatal body responsible for Mauritius’s essential imports.

Dayal began his duties on Monday, 26 January, following government approval of his appointment. He fills the vacancy left by Rajiv Servansingh, who resigned in late 2024 following the general elections.

The move is part of a broader series of appointments to key positions within the country’s public institutions.

A Strategic Mandate

As the new head of the STC, Dayal will oversee the procurement and distribution of critical commodities, including: Petroleum products, Flour & Rice.

A Political Veteran

A prominent figure in Mauritian politics, Dayal’s career with the Labour Party dates back to 1976. He has previously served the nation as both a Member of Parliament and a Cabinet Minister.

His political tenure was marked by a high-profile legal challenge following the 2019 elections.

As a defeated candidate in Constituency No. 8, Dayal filed an election petition to overturn the results involving former Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth.

The legal battle reached the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council but was ultimately unsuccessful.

National Recognition

Beyond his political and legal history, Dayal was recently honoured for his service to the state.

In March, he was appointed Grand Officer of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GOSK), a distinction recognising his contributions to education, social work, and politics.

The transition comes at a pivotal time for the STC as it manages the supply chain for the island’s most vital resources.
