7 Suspects Held in Custody by Police after Palmar Noise Complaint Turns Violent
Seven men have been remanded in custody on Monday, 26 January, following a violent confrontation with police officers at the popular Palmar public beach on Sunday afternoon, 25 January.
The group, aged between 22 and 38, was arrested this Monday, 26 January, in connection with a disturbance that erupted after officers intervened to address noise complaints involving a group of revellers.
A eighth individual, 20-year-old Ittish Jowrah of Poste-de-Flacq, was also questioned but has been released on parole.
The remaining seven suspects are scheduled to appear before the Flacq District Court on Tuesday, where they will face provisional charges of rebellion.
Investigation into Sunday’s Unrest
The arrests follow an escalation of tensions on the East Coast beach yesterday, 25 January.
What began as a police response to reports of noise pollution quickly descended into a series of incidents, leading to the current investigation into acts of rebellion against law enforcement.
Those currently held in police detention pending their court appearance have been identified as:
- Varun Treebhowon, 38, of Petit-Raffray
- Sanil Ganga, 36, of Roche-Terre
- Jean-Désiré Laval Thomas, 34, of Palmar
- Gunesh Treebhowon, 29, of Petit-Raffray
- Akshaye Keerpah, 25, of Belvédère
- Tissan Kumar Goongur, 23, of Camp-de-Masque Pavé
- Rajiv Gadadhar, 22, of Poste-de-Flacq
Authorities have confirmed that all seven men will spend the night in cells before their formal hearing on Tuesday, 27 January.
