Port-Louis Prepares for Floods: 16 Buildings Designated as Safe Havens
Sixteen strategic buildings in the capital have been officially designated as safe zones to shelter the public in the event of severe flooding. This unprecedented preparedness measure sees both public and private structures, including the SBM Tower, the Mauritius Telecom Tower, and the City Council of Port-Louis, earmarked as official evacuation points should water levels rise.
Evacuation and Awareness Initiative
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre (NDRRMC) is spearheading this initiative as part of a vast awareness programme for its response and evacuation plan.
Initially, police and elements of the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) will be mobilised to manage and supervise the evacuation of the public towards these secure sites.
Signage will be installed later to help the public navigate to the shelters.
Superintendent of Police Anerood Sookhareea, representing the NDRMC, confirmed that concrete measures would soon be implemented to ensure Port-Louis “remains calm and avoids panic” in the event of heavy rainfall.
He made the remarks during an awareness session organised by the NDRMC in Port-Louis this Friday, November 7.
