Record 308,286 Tax Returns Filed, MRA to Issue Rs 747.8m In Refunds
The Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) has registered a record 308,286 individual income tax returns for the 2025 filing season, following the midnight deadline on Wednesday, 15 October.
This year’s total marks a significant increase, with 11,279 more online submissions than were received by the MRA on the same date last year, when 297,007 returns were recorded.
The tax authority also confirmed that a substantial total of Rs 747.8 million is due to be refunded to 83,350 taxpayers who successfully filed their returns.
The MRA reminded the public that late declarations are subject to penalties. A 5% penalty on the amount of tax due is applied to all late filings. For those required to file electronically, an additional penalty of Rs 2,000 per month is applied until submission, capped at Rs 20,000.
However, a reduced penalty rate of 2% with a maximum charge of Rs 5,000 is in place for small businesses with an annual turnover of Rs 10 million or less, and for individuals who do not engage in commercial activity.
Furthermore, a monthly interest charge of 0.5% (or fraction of a month) is levied on any outstanding tax balance in cases of late payment.
