Former Police Commissioner Anil Kumar Dip has been arrested by the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) on provisional charges of Public Official Using Office for Gratification. The arrest, which followed a marathon interrogation on Tuesday, comes amid an investigation into alleged excessive payments totalling nearly Rs 198.39 million to police informers.

Dip, who spent his first night at the Moka Detention Center, appeared at the Port Louis court on Wednesday, 24 September, where he was denied bail.

The charges are filed under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act (PoCA) and Section 22 of the FCC Act.

The FCC alleges that Dip approved the excessive payments, made to informers through police units established during his command, including the Special Striking Team, the Force Crime Intelligence Unit, and the SSU Special Intelligence Cell.

The ongoing inquiry has already led to the arrests of several other police officials, including:

  • Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACP) Lilram Deal and Dunraz Gungadin
  • Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashik Jagai
  • Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP) Faraaz Mooniaruth and Rajcoomar Seewoo
  • Sergeants Yeshdeo Seeboruth and Yusuf Ali Hamud Hossen (also known as Mose)
