An innovative new scheme, backed by a significant Japanese grant, is set to tackle the scourge of discarded fishing gear in the Indian Ocean. The initiative, a collaboration between the Ministry of Agro-Industry and the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), will focus on reducing plastic pollution and promoting sustainable fishing practices.

The project will primarily benefit Mauritian fishing communities by enhancing their ability to collect, sort, and recycle old nets and equipment.

By introducing new technology, the scheme aims to reduce environmental impact while also boosting the safety and profitability of the fishing sector.

This collaborative effort will see public-private partnerships, the creation of new markets for recycled materials, and extensive knowledge-sharing.

It also includes training for fisheries managers, port authorities, and waste management agencies, alongside the introduction of new legislation to curb the problem of abandoned fishing gear.
