Health authorities in Mauritius have announced that the peak of a recent surge in acute respiratory infections has likely passed, but they are urging the public to remain vigilant. The acting Director of Health Services, Dr. Fazil Khodabocus, confirmed the apparent peak, yet emphasized that caution is still necessary.

Infections on the Rise

The number of cases has risen steadily over the last month, with 5,653 new cases reported between 8 and 14 September, an increase from 5,356 the previous week.

This follows a trend seen throughout August, where weekly cases consistently surpassed 4,000.

The viruses currently circulating include AH1N1, AH3N2, B, rhinovirus, adenovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, and COVID-19. Dr. Khodabocus attributes the rise to the onset of cooler weather.

Advice and Precautions

Individuals with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma are particularly vulnerable to complications like pneumonia and acute bronchitis.

Dr. Khodabocus stressed that these at-risk patients must adhere strictly to their prescribed treatments.

The doctor also noted that symptoms can last for several days and it’s essential to follow medical advice and get enough rest. Limiting social contact and getting vaccinated are also recommended to reduce transmission.

Furthermore, Dr. Khodabocus advises the public to boost their immunity with a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, adequate sleep, and regular physical activity.

He emphasized that the flu should not be taken lightly and urged people, especially those in high-risk groups, to maintain precautionary measures.

Globally, the World Health Organization estimates that between 290,000 and 650,000 people die each year from flu-related complications. While local data on flu-related deaths are not yet consolidated, some fatalities may be linked to the current outbreak.
