Students at a secondary school in the north of the country have been urged to self-harm, sparking concern among parents and educational authorities. A climate of anxiety has descended on the school after it was discovered that students in Grade 7 had been engaging in self-mutilation.

The incidents began discreetly, with several students inflicting minor injuries on themselves using school supplies.

However, the situation escalated when a student allegedly encouraged others to participate.

Reportedly, the girl at the centre of the issue is experiencing personal and family difficulties.

Teachers first noticed the unusual behaviour and quickly realised it wasn’t an isolated incident.

The phenomenon has now affected approximately 10 students, creating a distressing psychological atmosphere in their classrooms.

Teachers describe the students as withdrawn, anxious, and struggling to concentrate, noting a general lack of communication among them.

One anonymous student from Grade 7 told journalists that the self-harming had a psychological impact on the whole class.

“At one point, there were no more knives left in the canteen,” the student said, highlighting the general feeling of unease and fear among the students.

In response to the crisis, the Ministry of Education has set up an emergency support system for students, including on-site psychologists.

The school has also established a helpline for students. A source from the Ministry stated that this support will be available for as long as needed to understand and listen to the young people involved.

The Ministry has urged vigilance and better communication between parents, teachers, and students, noting that self-harm is often a hidden issue and a warning sign of distress.
