Mauritius Invests in Filmmakers with 8-month Sony-Led Training
The Mauritius Film Development Corporation (MFDC) has launched the Sony Masterclass Series, a new initiative aimed at bolstering the island’s burgeoning film industry. This pivotal development, which includes a new partnership with Mauritius Telecom and a fresh vision for the future of Mauritian cinema, was announced at a recent press conference.
A New Era for Local Filmmaking
The launch of the masterclass series is a key part of the MFDC’s broader strategy to position Mauritius as a major filmmaking hub in the Indian Ocean region.
This ambitious plan, led by MFDC CEO Kevin Gutty, also saw the unveiling of the corporation’s new logo and a new strategic alliance with Mauritius Telecom.
The telecom giant’s CEO, Veemal Gungadin, was on hand to confirm the collaboration, emphasising the role of technology in fostering creativity and supporting high-calibre film productions.
Masterclasses for Aspiring Filmmakers
The cornerstone of this new initiative is the Sony Masterclass Series, a free, eight-month training programme running from September 2025 to March 2026.
This series of five workshops is open to directors, cinematographers, and film technicians.
Taught by international experts, the sessions will cover essential filmmaking skills, including camera operation, lighting, colour grading, advanced shooting techniques, and the financial and technical management of film projects.
Participants who complete the workshops will receive a joint certificate from Media Trust and the University of Mauritius.
The programme aims to cultivate a skilled workforce and cement Mauritius’s reputation as a recognised cinematic destination.
The initiative is being carried out under the guidance of the Ministry of Arts and Culture.
