A 38-year-old man from La-Marie, Mauritius has been the victim of an extortion scheme, losing an estimated Rs 4 million. The victim, who lodged a complaint with Vacoas police, stated that the extortion began after he purchased three sliding doors, two lamps, a vacuum cleaner, and a chest of drawers for Rs 21,500 in July 2023.

The seller, a resident of the capital, Port Louis, contacted the victim in April, threatening to report him for handling stolen goods and claiming he would face a lengthy prison sentence. The seller demanded payment to close the matter.

Extortion and…’Investment’

Between April and August, the victim handed over a total of Rs 2.4 million in various payments to the man from Port Louis.

During this period, the victim also gave an additional Rs 1.6 million to two of the suspect’s relatives, who had persuaded him to invest in an online game.

The victim recently received a phone call from a man posing as a police officer, who threatened to implicate him in theft cases.

The victim suspects this is another attempt by the same individuals to extort more money from him. A police investigation is underway.
