A plot of land has been allocated to the Autism Mauritius Association to develop a specialized center in La Vigie. The official signing of the agreement took place on Wednesday, August 6, in Ébène, attended by the Minister of Lands and Housing, Shakeel Mohamed.

According to the minister, the center will provide tailored follow-up care, targeted therapies, and support for families.

These services are considered essential for promoting the inclusion of individuals with autism.

Laura Augustin, president of the Autism Mauritius Association, aims to make this site a dedicated community space for both children and adults living with autism.

Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, and experiences the world around them.

Key Features of Autism:

  1. Social Differences – Autistic people may find social situations challenging. They might struggle with small talk, eye contact, or understanding unspoken rules (like sarcasm or body language).
  2. Repetitive Behaviours & Routines – Many autistic people prefer routines and can feel stressed by unexpected changes. They may also have strong interests in specific topics.
  3. Sensory Sensitivities – Sounds, lights, textures, or smells can feel much more intense (or sometimes less noticeable) than for non-autistic people.
  4. Different Ways of Thinking – Autism often comes with unique strengths, like deep focus, attention to detail, and creative problem-solving.
