Reservoirs Reality: Water Levels Plummet to a Disheartening 38.9%
Mauritius’ reservoirs currently stand at a dismal overall filling rate of just 38.9%. The recent scant rainfall, hardly bolstered by the passing of Cyclone Garance, has done little to replenish the vital water supplies.
As figures are compared, a gloomy picture emerges: this time last year, the island’s reservoirs brimmed at a robust 91.6%.
Currently the situation is dire. The Mare Longue reservoir showcases the highest filling rate, yet even it struggles at 52.5%.
Here’s a closer look at the filling rates of our other reservoirs:
- La Nicolière: 45.8%
- Mare aux Vacoas: 41.3%
- Piton du Milieu: 38.1%
- Midlands: 37.6%
- Bagatelle: 37.5%
Tragically, La Ferme reservoir brought the lowest figures of all, languishing at a mere 27.4%.
As we grapple with these disheartening statistics, the urgent need for a robust water management strategy is obvious.
