Heavy rain and thunderstorms are set to sweep across Mauritius today, with a formal weather watch in effect until 8:00 pm this Friday.

Experts warned that a zone of instability approaching from the north-east is moving into the area, with conditions expected to deteriorate progressively throughout the day.

The Mauritius Meteorological Services issued the alert at 7:15 am this 17 April 2026.

Localised Downpours and Thunderstorms

Forecasters anticipate moderate localised showers accompanied by thunderstorms, primarily affecting the following areas:

  • The West
  • The South-West
  • The Central Plateau

There is a significant risk that these downpours could intensify and spread to other regions across the island as the day continues.

Flooding and Visibility Risks

Authorities have warned of potential water accumulations in flood-prone areas. Commuters are also being alerted to hazardous driving conditions, as heavy rain and fog are expected to severely reduce visibility on the roads.

Public Safety Advice

In response to the alert, the public has been urged to take the following precautions:

  • Seek Shelter: Avoid open plains, hiking trails, and sea excursions. Under no circumstances should individuals seek shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
  • Avoid High-Risk Zones: Stay clear of areas known for water accumulation and flooding.
  • Road Safety: Exercise extreme caution when driving due to the combined impact of fog and heavy showers.

The weather watch remains active until 20:00 this Friday evening.
