Rough Seas and 50km/h Gusts Trigger Urgent Safety Warnings For Mauritius Coastline
Island residents and visitors have been advised against entering the open sea and western or southern lagoons as a line of instability threatens to bring deteriorating weather conditions.
The Mauritius Meteorological Station issued the safety warning on Monday morning, 18 May, cautioning that a combination of moderate winds and strong seas will make maritime activities hazardous.
Waves are expected to reach heights of up to 3 metres, driven by south-westerly swells beyond the coral reefs.
While the island is experiencing largely fine weather today, conditions are set to change this evening.
A line of instability is moving into the region, bringing cloudier skies and localized showers overnight.
Shift in Weather Patterns
According to the meteorological bulletin, the eastern half of the island and the central highlands will bear the brunt of the wet weather later tonight.
Wind speeds are forecast to pick up, blowing from the south-east at roughly 20 km/h, with sudden gusts peaking at 50 km/h.
Regional Temperatures
Ahead of the unsettled evening weather, daytime temperatures are expected to peak between 24°C and 26°C across the central heights, reaching more comfortable highs of 28°C to 30°C along the coast.
As the clouds move in overnight, temperatures will drop to minimums of 18°C to 20°C on the central plateau, while coastal areas will remain milder, hovering between 22°C and 25°C. Maritime authorities continue to urge caution until the current weather system passes.
