Public Health Crisis as 168 Chikungunya 3 Leptospirosis and 2 Mpox Remain

Health officials have confirmed that active Chikungunya cases have reached 168, marking a significant escalation in an epidemic that has seen 2,051 infections since the start of the year.

Dr Fazil Khodabocus, Acting Director of Health, described the figures as “high” and warned that the outbreak is gaining momentum.

While the primary clusters remain concentrated in Rose-Hill, Quatre-Bornes, and their surrounding suburbs, the virus has now spread to western regions including Tamarin, La Gaulette, La Preneuse, and Bambous.

Fatalities and Critical Illness

The Ministry of Health also reported a further death from Leptospirosis on Friday, 1 May, bringing the total number of victims to five.

The deceased was identified as a 60-year-old man from Facq with underlying health conditions.

There are currently three active cases of Leptospirosis under treatment.

These include:

  • A 64-year-old man from Trèfles, Rose-Hill, currently admitted to Candos Hospital.
  • A 28-year-old woman receiving care at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital.

Since January, the country has recorded a total of 20 Leptospirosis cases.

Monitoring of Other Viral Threats

In addition to the mosquito-borne and bacterial outbreaks, medical authorities continue to monitor Mpox (Monkeypox) within the territory.

According to official records, the two previously confirmed cases of Mpox remain under medical supervision in hospital.

No further infections have been reported at this time.
