Police Warn Professionals after Surge in Sophisticated WhatsApp Scam Attacks

Law enforcement authorities have issued a nationwide warning following a surge in sophisticated WhatsApp hacking incidents specifically targeting professional users.

Despite recent public awareness campaigns, fraudsters are refining their tactics to exploit victims’ specific industries.

The scam begins with a targeted approach where criminals pose as organisers of professional events or seminars closely related to the victim’s field of expertise to establish immediate trust.

The “One-Time Password” Trap

The pivotal moment of the scam occurs during conversation when the fraudster requests a six-digit One-Time Password (OTP).

Victims are told the code is a mandatory requirement to confirm their attendance or validate an invitation to the supposed professional event.

The reality, however, is far more malicious. Once the code is surrendered, the attacker uses it to seize total control of the victim’s WhatsApp account on a separate device, effectively locking the legitimate owner out.

Identity Theft and Financial Extortion

With full access to the hijacked account, the criminal assumes the victim’s identity. They then broadcast urgent requests for money to the victim’s:

• Family members
• Close friends
• Professional colleagues

By leveraging the victim’s established credibility and personal relationships, the scammers are able to illicitly extort funds under the guise of an emergency.

Official Guidance for Professionals

Police have reiterated an appeal for absolute vigilance, stressing that security codes must never be shared with third parties.

“No legitimate organisation will ever ask for a one-time password to confirm an invitation or attendance at an event,” a police spokesperson clarified.

Users are urged to remain cautious of any unsolicited contact regarding professional events that culminates in a request for security credentials.
