The Ministry of Health and Wellness is to make a final payment of nearly Rs 27.87 million ($593,021.89 USD) for COVID-19 vaccines it never actually received, following a cabinet meeting on Friday 15 May 2026.

The multi-million rupee payout relates to an outstanding claim from the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust for Johnson & Johnson vaccines.

Under the terms of a Commitment Undertaking and a Participation Agreement signed by the previous government in May 2021, the Ministry of Health and Wellness was legally obligated to settle the total amount due, regardless of the fact that the vaccines were never delivered to the country.

The financial settlement was confirmed in the official briefing from Friday, 15 May, Council of Ministers meeting.
