Mauritius Eyes New Maxillofacial Center with International Expert
Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam met on 7th August with Professor Subramoniam Muthiah Balaji, a leading specialist in complex maxillofacial and reconstructive surgery. This is his second official mission to Mauritius this year, during which he has performed specialized surgeries, followed up on previous cases, and assessed new patients.
The discussion focused on creating a Center of Excellence for maxillofacial surgery in Mauritius.
Professor Balaji outlined his detailed plan, emphasizing close collaboration between local Mauritian doctors and international specialists.
The goal is to provide advanced care for children and adults with complex facial deformities.
They also discussed challenges related to ensuring the project’s sustainability, including ongoing training and skills transfer.
Additionally, the conversation covered the issues of oral and gastrointestinal cancers, highlighting the need for a national awareness campaign and early detection efforts.
