Curepipe Residents Rally to Protect 25 Vulnerable Homeless from Winter Chill

A grassroots citizen movement has been launched in Curepipe to support the local homeless population following a viral social media appeal.

Driven by falling temperatures and the growing hardships faced by rough sleepers, local resident Emanuel Cateaux initiated the action by posting a message on Facebook.

The appeal urged residents to show solidarity, quickly prompting widespread offers of clothing, blankets, and food from the online community.

An informal collective of volunteers has since formed from this wave of generosity.

“We are neither an organisation nor an association,” Mr Cateaux explained. “We are simply local residents who want to help.”

The group has already identified 25 individuals in urgent need of assistance. From 9:30 am this Friday, 22 May, volunteers gathered to receive donations before distributing them to the town’s most vulnerable.

The distribution follows days of preparation by Mr Cateaux, who personally met with several of Curepipe’s homeless residents to assess their specific needs and ensure the aid is targeted effectively.

“For us, it may seem like little, but for them, it represents a huge amount,” Mr Cateaux said, adding that the initiative is entirely non-political.

“We simply want to bring a little comfort to these people who are going through difficult times.”

Buoyed by the solidarity shown by the community, the volunteers now hope to sustain the initiative and continue distributions on a regular basis.
