Police Hunt Driver after Van Hits 2 Pilgrims in Belle-Rive

Police have launched an intensive search for a van driver who fled the scene after ploughing into a group of pilgrims in the early hours of Tuesday, 10 February.

The incident occurred near the AMB Wholesale Market in Belle-Rive as the group, consisting of 10 to 15 devotees from Poste-de-Flacq, were making their way to the sacred lake of Grand Bassin.

Two pilgrims sustained injuries when the vehicle, which was travelling towards Wooton, struck the group and failed to stop.

Emergency Response

Emergency Response Service personnel attended the scene and transported the two injured devotees to the hospital.

At the time of the collision, the group was carrying a kawar as part of their pilgrimage.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have confirmed that a formal investigation is now underway. According to initial police reports:

  • The Vehicle: A van heading in the direction of Wooton.
  • The Victims: Members of a group of approximately 10 to 15 people.
  • The Status: The driver remains at large and is being actively sought by investigators.
