Air Mauritius U-Turn on Staff Travel Perks After Rights Talks
Air Mauritius has reinstated reduced-fare travel privileges for staff who had launched legal action against the company, following a meeting with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The airline, in a statement issued on Thursday, 23 October, confirmed the reversal of its previous decision to suspend these perks. The initial suspension had been imposed on employees who had initiated lawsuits against the carrier.
Humanitarian Grounds Cited
The company’s board, after discussions with the NHRC president and members on 14 October 2025, decided to lift the suspension based on “humanitarian considerations” and the exchanges held during the meeting.
Air Mauritius’s leadership, however, maintained that the reduced-fare travel is a “privilege and not a right,” asserting that its suspension was “juridically founded.” The airline stressed that the measure was “in no way a violation of human rights.”
Exceptions to Reinstatement
Despite the general reinstatement, the company clarified that the lifting of the suspension will not apply to all employees.
Exclusions are:
- Staff being prosecuted for an offence detrimental to the company.
- Employees subject to procedures for serious misconduct.
- Those involved in cases of embezzlement or fund recovery.
Air Mauritius concluded by reaffirming its commitment to transparency and acting in accordance with the principles of fairness.
