470 Jobs Lost as Star Knitwear Closes; Investigation into Fund Misuse Launched
Star Knitwear permanently closes its doors, resulting in the layoff of 470 employees, including 312 Mauritians. Beyond the closure, authorities are investigating a possible case of misappropriation of funds.
The Minister of Labour, Reza Uteem has called for an investigation by Receiver Managers.
According to Minister Uteem, Star Knitwear received significant loans from the Mauritius Investment Corporation (MIC), but how the money was used remains unclear.
The government has assured that it will support the affected workers. The redundancy case has been referred to the Redundancy Board.
Meanwhile, Minister Uteem announced during a press conference in Port Louis that the Ministry of Labour will use the Wage Guarantee Fund to pay the employees’ overdue salaries, as provided under the Workers’ Rights Act.
