Alarming 170,000 Mauritians Afflicted with Kidney Diseases

Recent epidemiological studies reveal that approximately 170,000 individuals in Mauritius are affected by kidney diseases, with 1,501 currently undergoing dialysis.

This alarming prevalence is closely tied to the high incidence of diabetes, hypertension, and obesity in the country.

While most of the affected individuals may not necessitate dialysis, their kidney function is compromised, indicating imbalances in creatinine and albumin levels. Health experts emphasize the urgency of addressing these health challenges.

Health Minister Kailesh Jagutpal announced the forthcoming establishment of a kidney transplantation unit at the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing renal care facilities.

With risk factors like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity prevalent, the number of kidney patients is expected to persist, as highlighted by experts. Over three-quarters of the population exhibit three or more of these risk factors, heightening the risk of kidney diseases.

In 2022, a total of 221,534 dialysis sessions were conducted in various centres.

The government’s efforts also extend to revitalizing renal transplantations from living donors and establishing a program for deceased donors. This initiative aims to bolster the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered, and safe curative services.

The resumption of kidney transplants in Mauritius in October 2022 marked a significant milestone, with 18 patients receiving new kidneys.

Previously, between 2017 and 2022, 47 patients had to seek this intervention in India due to the unavailability of such services locally.
