Concerns Raised Over Rs 21.3 Billion Hotel Construction Plan

The announcement of a Rs 21.3 billion investment in the construction of 19 new hotels by Tourism Minister Steven Obeegadoo has sparked environmental concerns.

While intended to boost the economy, critics question the feasibility of sustaining further construction projects in the face of escalating climate change impacts.

Coastal construction, a common choice for such ventures, presents significant risks including area saturation and flooding.

Labour MP Fabrice David  note a potential contradiction in the government’s approach, “as the Prime Minister talks on climate change urgency on international platforms, while his deputy unveils expansive hotel projects”.

Previous reports recommend a shift away from coastal hotel development due to environmental implications, favouring eco-friendly, countryside-based tourism.

Oceanographer Vassen Kauppaymuthoo has called for thorough evaluation of existing projects and greater transparency on the origin and objectives of investments.

Additionally, they stress the importance of sustainability in the tourism sector, urging a rethink of Mauritius’ approach to promote a more environmentally conscious model.
