Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam has placed the fight against illicit drugs and the stabilisation of the national economy at the top of his government’s agenda, using his 58th Independence Day address to signal a shift towards urgent, concrete action.

Addressing the nation on Thursday, 12 March, Dr Navin Ramgoolam acknowledged the immense scale of the drug crisis, describing the proliferation of narcotics as a “many-headed serpent” where, for every head severed, another emerges.

To combat this, the Prime Minister announced an intensification of efforts, spearheaded by the appointment of a new senior official to lead the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU).

Furthermore, the government is set to introduce a bill in Parliament to establish a National Crime Agency, aimed at providing a more robust institutional response to the crisis.

Economic Peril and Global Headwinds

Beyond domestic security, Dr Ramgoolam issued a stark warning regarding the country’s economic health.

He highlighted the looming threat of a credit rating downgrade by Moody’s, noting that the agency is closely monitoring the nation’s fiscal situation.

“We have an obligation to reduce public debt and the deficit,” the Prime Minister stated, stressing that decisive action is required to secure the country’s future.

This economic challenge is being compounded by external factors. Dr Navin Ramgoolam described the ongoing war in the Middle East as a “great human tragedy” that is creating significant economic turbulence.

He noted that the conflict has exacerbated the country’s already difficult economic position, contributing to increased national uncertainty.

Chagos Negotiations Face Further Delays

The Prime Minister also addressed the highly anticipated progress regarding the Chagos archipelago.

While the government had hoped for a swift resolution through the formalisation of sovereignty over the islands, Navin Ramgoolam conceded that the process is likely to take longer than previously anticipated.

Throughout his address, the Prime Minister reaffirmed Mauritius’s commitment to international law and the principles of the United Nations, even as his administration faces these overlapping domestic and global pressures.
