Anti-narcotics officers have launched an investigation after a significant cache of suspected drugs was discovered concealed beneath a passenger seat on a flight arriving from London.

The alarm was raised at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) International Airport on Tuesday 27th, after airport authorities alerted the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) to the presence of illicit substances on board the aircraft.

Discovery During Routine Cleaning

The discovery was made by an employee of a cleaning firm during a scheduled turnaround of the plane.

The worker found four tubes, tightly bound with rope, which had been secreted under one of the passenger seats.

Preliminary assessments by the authorities indicate that the tubes contain a substance weighing a total of 238g.

Ongoing Investigation

While the exact nature of the substance is yet to be formally confirmed, it is strongly suspected to be illegal drugs.

The ADSU has officially taken custody of the evidence and opened an inquiry into the matter to identify those responsible for the smuggling attempt.

No arrests have been reported at this stage.
