Veteran Journalist Jean-Claude Dedans Dies Aged 64 after 37 Years in Media
The Mauritian media community is in mourning following the death of Jean-Claude Dedans, a veteran journalist and collaborator at Le Défi Media Group, who has passed away at the age of 64.
Mr Dedans, whose career spanned nearly four decades, was a well-known figure in the local press landscape.
His remains will be laid out at the Elie & Sons funeral parlour in Beau-Bassin from 4:00 pm this Thursday 22.
A Distinguished Career
Starting his journey in 1989 at The Sun newspaper as a proofreader, Mr Dedans quickly transitioned into journalism.
His professional path took him through several major publications, including the weekly 5-Plus, before he joined Le Défi.
Beyond the newsroom, he served the public sector as a press attaché for former Minister Anil Gayan at the Ministry of Health. He later returned to his roots at Le Défi Media Group as a collaborator.
‘Ciselling’ Words with Rare Skill
Known for his sensitive and intimate portraits, colleagues described his writing style as having a unique “dexterity.” Just ten days ago, he was still active in the field, covering:
- The MMM political bureau meeting.
- A feature on a stonecutter in Pointe-aux-Sables.
A tribute from his colleagues noted that he “handled words as others handle a hammer,” crafts-fully shaping stories with a particular focus on the human element.
Final Farewell
Mr Dedans was widely respected for his warm nature and extensive field experience, making him a cherished figure among his peers.
Joining the press community in expressing our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
