The man, identified as a computer consultant, has been arrested at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport (Plaisance) in Mauritius after customs officers discovered heroin pellets worth an estimated Rs 10.6 million concealed inside his stomach.

Drug Smuggler Apprehended

The dramatic seizure, following a joint operation by the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) and the Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS), took place on November 10.

The suspect, 43-year-old Chondi Baragi, a Gambian national and resident of Sierra Leone, had arrived on a flight from Nairobi, Kenya.

Customs Act on Suspicion

Mr. Baragi, who claimed to be an IT consultant, was stopped for a customs check while using the Green Channel corridor. CANS agents grew suspicious that he was carrying illicit goods and subjected him to an X-ray examination.

The scan revealed the presence of foreign objects in his intestine. He was then transferred to Rose-Belle Hospital, where he subsequently expelled a total of 41 pellets of heroin.

Court Appearance and Ongoing Probe

The Gambian national was brought before the Mahébourg court on Monday, November 17, facing a provisional charge of “Drug Dealing With Aggravating Circumstances: Importation of Heroin With an Averment of Trafficking.”

Airport anti-drug police are now intensifying their investigation to trace the local contact to whom the drug pellets were ultimately destined. The drug mule remains in police custody.
