A massive drug seizure took place at Plaisance Airport after 860 grammes of heroin, valued at an estimated Rs 13 million, was discovered abandoned under a passenger seat aboard a South African Airways (SAA) flight.

The significant haul was found on SAA Flight SA190, which had arrived from Johannesburg and landed at Plaisance on Sunday, 9 November.

The drug consignment was discovered during the aircraft’s cleaning process when a cleaning team member spotted the package under a seat.

The contraband was described as a rectangular package, which had been carefully wrapped with adhesive tape.

Authorities were immediately alerted, and officers from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS) and the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (Adsu) quickly moved in to seize the illicit cargo.

The anti-drug brigade has since launched an investigation in an attempt to identify the presumed recipient or recipients responsible for the large shipment.
