French Drug Smugglers Jailed for 22 Years in Mauritius
Two French nationals, Diafra Trarore and Youssouf Cherif, have been sentenced to 22 years in prison each in Mauritius after pleading guilty to hashish trafficking.
The Sentencing
The lengthy sentences were handed down by Judge Mehdi Manrakhan in the Assize Court on Friday, November 7, following the men’s admission of guilt.
The judge stressed in his ruling that the importation of the drug into Mauritius was for “lucrative” purposes.
The Charges
- Diafra Trarore faced charges for importing 39 pellets of hashish weighing 405.09g, with an estimated street value of Rs 1.2 million.
- Youssouf Cherif was accused of being in possession of 78 pellets of the same drug, weighing 781.49g, with an estimated market value of Rs 2.3 million.
Details of the Crime
The two men had arrived in Mauritius on July 12, 2019, on separate flights from Paris.
During their depositions to investigators, both Trarore and Cherif admitted to transporting the drugs in exchange for money.
