3 Councils Affected: La-Chaumière Facility to Introduce Mandatory Waste Sorting
La-Chaumière Transfer Station, which services local authorities across a significant portion of Mauritius, is set to introduce a new recycling centre as part of a national strategy to boost waste recovery. The operational contractor for the facility, located in the Black River district, will now be required to establish a sorting centre to improve the efficiency of waste segregation.
Boosting Recycling Rates
The move is designed to increase the overall recycling rate and reduce the volume of waste currently being sent to landfill sites. Recyclable materials will be separated and collected in different skips, categorised according to the type of material.
The Chaumière Transfer Station is crucial for waste management, serving:
- The Black River District Council.
- The Quatre-Bornes Municipal Council.
- The Beau-Bassin/Rose-Hill Municipal Council.
Composition of Household Waste
The need for more efficient sorting is underscored by the average composition of household waste in the area, which highlights the potential for greater material recovery:
- Kitchen Waste: 45%
- Garden Waste: 25%
- Paper: 10%
- Plastic: 9%
- Textiles: 4%
- Glass: 3%
- Metals: 2%
- Other: 2%
