A significant boost has been given to dementia support in Mauritius, as the Association Alzheimer and Dementia (AAD) has formally partnered with Bank One to help families grappling with the condition. The agreement aims to tackle what is recognised as a largely underserved public health issue across the island.

The bank signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the AAD at its Head Office in Port Louis on October 1, 2025, pledging support for initiatives that promote inclusion, dignity, and long-term social impact.

Key Details and Organisational Support

The partnership aims to expand the AAD’s programmes, strengthen its care services, and raise wider public awareness, according to AAD President Dr. Ameenah Sorefan.

Dr. Sorefan noted that the conditions are “too often… surrounded by silence and stigma,” which prevents people from seeking timely help.

Bank One CEO Sunil Ramgobin stated that the partnership is a way for the bank to “stand alongside those whose lives are directly impacted by dementia,” adding that “prosperity also means well-being.”

Valerie Duval, Chair of Bank One’s Sustainability Committee, highlighted the bank’s aim to “channel resources towards causes that can potentially transform lives,” reinforcing their values of care and respect.

AAD’s Ongoing Work

The AAD, established in 2010, is a non-profit organisation that has played a leading role in tackling Alzheimer’s and dementia in Mauritius.

Its efforts include:

  • Operating a Day Care Centre in Belle Rose.
  • Providing training for caregivers.
  • Running public awareness campaigns.

Both Bank One and the AAD affirmed their joint responsibility to the community to ensure that families living with dementia receive appropriate care, dignity, and attention.

Attendees and Background

The signing ceremony at the bank’s Head Office brought together the Bank’s Executive Committee, CEO, and members of the AAD, led by Dr. Sorefan.

Bank One was established in 2008 as a joint venture between the I&M Group (East Africa) and CIEL Finance (a Mauritian conglomerate).

The AAD is dedicated to promoting awareness, education, and compassionate care for individuals affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
