The air hangs thick with the weight of grief and unanswered questions. A respected magistrate, Varsha Biefun Doorga, lies dead, her life tragically cut short. And now, the Medical Council has delivered its damning verdict: Dr. Nishan Moheeputh, the plastic surgeon who performed her liposuction, has been suspended.

The Medical Council has deemed any further medical practice by Dr. Moheeputh to be illegal.

This is the outcome a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Magistrate Doorga’s death, a death that has cast a long shadow of suspicion.

The saga began in July 2024, when Varsha Doorga, seeking to address weight concerns, underwent liposuction at a clinic in Grand-Baie.

The procedure, a Friday the 19th operation, was intended to be the start of a new chapter.

But within days, a nightmare unfolded. Back at home, her condition deteriorated rapidly.

Loved ones recounted agonising abdominal pain, accompanied by breathing difficulties that stole her ability to speak.

She perished on the way to a clinic.

The post-mortem, conducted by Chief Police Medical Officer Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, revealed that Mrs. Doorga died of septicemia, a lethal infection caused by a perforated intestine.

The Medical Council’s decision to suspend Dr. Moheeputh stems from their conclusion of a prima facie case, a case requiring further scrutiny.

His fate now rests with the Medical Disciplinary Tribunal (MDT).

Defi Media source within the Medical Council confirmed that this suspension, pending the MDT’s verdict, is a measure to prevent Dr. Moheeputh, a specialist in plastic and reconstructive surgery, from practising medicine.

The consequences are severe. Any medical practice undertaken by him will be deemed illegal, a violation of the Medical Council Act, potentially leading to even more severe sanctions.

Dr. Moheeputh now has the opportunity to defend himself before the MDT, to argue against the Council’s findings and to avert the potential ultimate penalty: being struck off the medical register.

Dr. Moheeputh is no stranger to controversy. He was forced to resign from his position in the public sector following a series of incidents, including accusations of inappropriate patient treatment and unacceptable behaviour towards a female patient.

In May 2022, a policewoman accused him of sexual assault, leading to his dismissal from a prominent group of private clinics.

Despite facing sanctions from the Medical Council for “minor misconduct,” he continued to practice, finding a position in a private healthcare facility in the north of the island.
