Government Abolishes Mandatory SIM Card Registration

In a significant policy change, the government has officially discontinued the requirement for mandatory registration of SIM cards. This decision was approved during a Council of Ministers meeting held on Friday, December 27. The new “Information and Communication Technologies (Registration of SIM) (Revocation) Regulations 2024” have been enacted, effectively nullifying the previous “Information and Communication Technologies (Registration of SIM) Regulations 2023.”

As a result of this decision, mobile operators are now mandated to delete their databases containing photographs of individuals who had previously registered their SIM cards.

Additionally, the Council of Ministers extended the moratorium on the ban of certain non-biodegradable plastics until January 14, 2026.

This extension applies to specific items such as bowls and cups for dairy products, as well as trays for food packaging that uses ‘modified atmosphere’.

The meeting also addressed the restructuring of the board of directors for the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation.

Amaresh Singh Ramlugan has been appointed as the part-time chairperson, alongside several members: Marie Joëlle Sandrine Valère-Bolli, who is serving as the Acting Senior Chief Executive of the Prime Minister’s Office and the Director of the Government Information Service; Rajcoomaree Issur; Anne Robert; Vishnou Gondeea; and Dr. Roukaiya Kasenally.

These decisions mark a significant shift in government policy, with implications for communication regulations and environmental practices in the country.
