A search operation was launched by the police and coast guard on Wednesday, May 15, after a young man went missing during a sudden storm surge on the beach of Riambel.

The 20-year-old student, Chirag Pippalva, was resting on the shore with his two friends when a massive wave suddenly swept over them.

While his companions managed to escape, Pippalva was swept away by the strong currents and lost sight of his friends.

The authorities were quickly alerted to the situation, and the Souillac Police Department and the National Coast Guard of the region sprang into action.

A police helicopter, piloted by Superintendent Bobeechurn and Deputy Assistant Superintendent Police Seesaha, accompanied by Constables Goodur and Gurjoo, was dispatched to the scene.

Despite the difficulties, the teams worked relentlessly to locate Pippalva, but unfortunately, his body was retrieved from the Riambel Lagoon on Friday morning, May 17.

The tragic incident on Riambel Beach serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety and taking necessary precautions when engaging in water activities.

It’s a reminder of the unpredictable nature of our oceans and the importance of being prepared for any eventuality.
