The Commissioner of Prisons, Dev Jokhoo, has formally submitted his resignation after just 11 months in the role, citing urgent personal reasons for his departure.

In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister dated 17 March 2026, Mr Jokhoo stated that “urgent personal problems” have made it impossible for him to continue in his current capacity.

Despite the official reason provided, reports emerged on Monday, March 16, via RadioPlus suggesting a more contentious exit.

According to those findings, the Prime Minister allegedly requested Mr Jokhoo’s departure following the awarding of a controversial contract for the supply of frozen fish—an arrangement reportedly deemed “unacceptable” by those close to Navin Ramgoolam.

Transition Period

Mr Jokhoo is set to serve a 30-day notice period, in accordance with the terms of his assignment. He will remain in his post until this period concludes.

Reflections on Tenure

Reflecting on his time at the helm of the Mauritius Prison Service, Mr Jokhoo noted in his resignation document that he “fully appreciated” his 11-month tenure.

He further expressed his gratitude for the trust that had been placed in him during his leadership of the service.
