Severe Weather: 2.5 Metre Waves and Thunderstorms Prompt Urgent High Sea Ban
Localized thunderstorms and waves reaching 2.5 metres have prompted safety warnings this Tuesday, 17 March, as an unstable air mass moves across the region. Authorities have advised the public to avoid open spaces, hiking, or seeking shelter under trees during expected electrical storms.
Those at sea face particularly hazardous conditions, with officials strongly discouraging any ventures beyond the reefs due to heavy swells.
Unsettled Afternoon Forecast
The unsettled weather is driven by a light, humid, and unstable airstream. While the morning began with cloud cover and showers concentrated in the east and over high ground, conditions are expected to deteriorate as the day progresses.
By this afternoon, cloud cover will thicken over the central plateau and southern districts.
Forecasters warn of localized showers in these areas, which may turn moderate and carry a significant risk of thunderstorms.
Residents in elevated areas should also prepare for patches of fog, which may reduce visibility.
Temperature and Wind Outlook
Despite the damp conditions, temperatures will remain warm across the island:
- Coastal Regions: Highs of 28°C to 32°C; lows of 23°C to 26°C.
- Central Plateau: Highs of 24°C to 27°C; lows of 19°C to 21°C.
A light northerly breeze will persist throughout the day, blowing at approximately 15 km/h.
Evening Conditions
The outlook for tonight remains damp, with further cloudy periods and showers anticipated. The brunt of the overnight rain is expected to affect the eastern half of the island and higher terrain.
Safety remains the priority, with the public urged to stay in secure locations whenever lightning is present.
