Réunion Island: Lava Hits Ocean for First Time in 19 Years at Piton de la Fournaise

Molten lava from the Piton de la Fournaise volcano has reached the sea for the first time in nearly two decades, triggering spectacular plumes of steam as the flow hit the water overnight.

The rare encounter between fire and water, occurring between the night of 15 March and the morning of 16 March, marks a significant milestone in an eruptive cycle that has been active since 13 February 2026.

This phenomenon has not been witnessed on the island since 2007.

Aerial footage captured during the night shows the intense physical reaction at the shoreline.

Authorities confirm that the volcano remains under close observation, as several distinct arms of the lava flow continue to progress across the landscape.
